Agriculture Minister Suswono said the rice imports the government was planning would not harm domestic farmers because their quantity would not be large.

"We plan to import only 1 million tons of rice. This is small compared to national production per year which stands at 37 million tons," said the minister, adding that the rice would be imported to create a national rice stock safety net.

Thousands mourn at Simoncelli`s funeral

Thousands of fans, friends and family attended Marco Simoncelli`s funeral in Italy Thursday five days after the MotoGP rider died after losing control of his motorcycle during the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Mourners followed an Italian tradition of bidding farewell to the dead by clapping as the 24-year old`s coffin passed before being taken to its final resting place.

Number of tourists visiting Komodo Island up

The number of foreign tourists visiting Komodo National Park has increased since Komodo became a finalist in the New7Wonders of Nature competition, East Nusatenggara (NTT) Deputy Governor Esthon Foenay said.

"Up to August 2011, some 32,354 foreign tourists visited the Komodo national park while the number of domestic tourists who came to the island was 4,145, up from 2,955 in 2010," the deputy governor said here on Saturday.

Govt issues action plan for gas emission reduction

The government has issued an action plan for nationwide greenhouse gas emission reduction to achieve the emission reduction target of 41 percent in 2020, an official said.

The government regulation serving as the basis for the implementation of the action plan was signed on September 20, 2011, Head of the Public Relations Bureau at the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) Maruhum Batubara said at a discussion here on Friday.

Under the government regulation, the central and regional governments including ministries and government institutes were responsible for implementing the action plan, he said.

Fujimori family wants pardon for Peru ex-leader

Relatives of Peru`s ailing ex-president Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses, will ask the government to free him on humanitarian grounds, his brother said Saturday.

The 73-year-old Fujimori, who served as Peru`s president from 1990-2000, is suffering from cancer and was hospitalized earlier this month after falling out of bed in prison.

Fujimori fled to his parents` native Japan in the final days of his presidency in the midst of a massive corruption scandal, and then resigned via fax from a Tokyo hotel in late 2000.

Two African Union peacekeepers were injured on Saturday when Somalia`s al Shabaab rebels attacked one of the mission`s bases in Mogadishu, a spokesman for the force said.

President to make 5-day working visit in France

Libya envoy says Kadhafi not shot in detention

Preliminary reports from the inquiry into the death of Moamer Kadhafi indicate he was not shot after his detention last week, a Libyan envoy told the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

"According to initial reports, none of the revolutionaries fired at him after arresting him," said Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya`s deputy UN ambassador.

Dabbashi spoke at a Security Council meeting on Libya where concern about human rights was again raised. Kadhafi died last Thursday in mysterious circumstances and his body was buried at a secret desert location on Monday.

Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said no military troops from outside Papua had been deployed there to back up security forces in the restive province.

"(There have been) no TNI personel shipments to Papua from other regions. Security (there) is fully under the police`s control," he said on the sidelines of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s visit to aircraft industry PT Dirgantara Indonesia here on Wednesday.

Marathon runner Ruyati ran the 26th Southeast Asian Games torch around Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday as part of the torch`s journey to Palembang, South Sumatra, where the games will take place.

The torch was flown from Semarang, Central Java, and arrived at Komodo airport in Labuhan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara at 10.15am local time and was immediately taken to Komodo Island.

Obama: Kadhafi death sends message of freedom

US President Barack Obama said Tuesday that Moamer Kadhafi`s grisly death sent a message to dictators around the world that people long to be free.

Obama appeared on NBC`s "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," as part of a west coast campaign and fundraising swing as he gears up his 2012 reelection bid and pressures Congress to pass his job-creating measures.

He said that Kadhafi, someone who for 40 years "terrorized his country and supported terrorism," had been given ample opportunity to leave power and transition his nation towards democracy.

Muamar Gaddafi and his son Mo`tassim were buried at dawn on Tuesday in an unknown location, ending a wrangle over the rotting bodies.

"Gaddafi and the son, Mo`tassim, were buried at dawn in a secret place with proper respects paid. We will release more details officially later," a senior interim government official told Reuters.

Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor returned home from a hospital on Friday after recovering from two stomach surgeries and suffering a bout of pneumonia.

The 94 year-old actress, who has suffered numerous health issues in recent years, was "happy and smiling," her husband, Frederic Prinz von Anhalt, told Reuters on Friday.

Govt wants RI to become world`s largest wood producer

The government is determined to turn Indonesia into the world`s largest wood producer in the next 25 years without destroying natural forests, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said.

To achieve the goal, the government would among others intensify tree-planting campaigns in which each citizen was expected to plant at least 10 trees, he said on the sidelines of a discussion with bloggers here on Friday night.

Awlaqi son among militants killed in Yemen strikes

A son of US-born Al-Qaeda cleric Anwar Al-Awlaqi was among seven suspected jihadist militants killed in a trio of apparent US air stikes in Yemen, a member of his tribe said on Saturday.

"Abderrahman Anwar al-Awlaqi was killed in the raid," the tribal source told AFP, adding that he had received confirmation from the militant-controlled Yemeni hospital where the dead and wounded from Friday evening`s strikes were taken.

President to install new cabinet on october 19

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono plans to install his newly-reshuffled cabinet on October 19, his spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said here on Saturday.

"The installation will be on October 19 before we leave for Lombok," he said after the summoning of candidates for deputy ministers at the President`s private residence.

Presiden Otoritas Palestina Mahmoud Abbas menuntut permintaan maaf Israel terhadap Turki terkait dengan kasus penyerangan kapal Mavi Marmara yang membuat hubungan Israel dan Turki memburuk.

"Perbaikan hubungan Turki dan Israel akan mendukung kelangsungan dialog damai," ujar Abbas, seperti dikutip Sabah, Jumat (7/10/2011).

Abbas juga menambahkan, Turki yang dahulu menjadi mediator antara Suriah dan Israel akan menjadi mediator yang sukses bagi dialog damai Israel dan Palestina.

Al-Qaeda still a "threat" after Awlaqi death: FBI

The killing of US-born Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi has weakened Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, but the group remains a "significant threat" to the United States, the head of the FBI said Thursday.

Awlaqi -- the leader of external operations for AQAP -- and Samir Khan, a Pakistani-American who was the editor of Al-Qaeda`s English-language magazine, were killed last week in a suspected US drone strike in Yemen.

"Despite this blow to their leadership, AQAP remains a significant threat to the homeland, and we must maintain our vigilance in responding to this threat," FBI Director Robert Mueller told the House intelligence committee.

Mantan Mensesneg Moerdiono Meninggal Dunia

Mantan menteri sekretaris negara di era presiden Soeharto, Moerdiono, meninggal dunia di Singapura, Jumat (7/10) pukul 19.40 WIB. Putri sulung almarhum, Ninuk Mardiana Pambudy melalui sambungan telepon dari Singapura kepada //Republika// mengatakan, Moerdiono meninggal dalam keadaan tenang setalah dua bulan dirawat di Rumah Sakit Gleneagles, Singapura.

“Saya ikut mendampingi papa saat papa pergi, banyak di sini yang mendampingi papa. Minta doanya semua dari tanah air ya,” kata Ninuk.

Ninuk melanjutkan, saat terbaring sakit sampai tiada, Moerdiono kerap berpesan agar keluarga dan semua anak-anaknya terus menjaga nama baik, kehormatan, dan kewibawaan keluarga dalam menjalankan laku hidup sehari-hari.
