Agency detects 35 hotspots in Sumatra

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Riau Province has detected at least 35 hotspots in Sumatra that have the potential of causing forest and land fires, an official said.

"Our latest monitoring using the US NOAA satellite detected on Tuesday at least 35 hotspots in Sumatra which had the potentials to cause forest fires," Riau BMKG analyst Sanya Gautami said here on Wednesday.

He said that most of the hotspots were detected in Riau, reaching 18 spots. This spots scattered in a number of districts such as Rokan Hilir (7) and Bengkalis (3).

President to invite Pontianak dancers to palace

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will invite Pontianak dancers group to perform the "Gerak Khatulistiwa" or Equator Motion dance at the presidential palace on the independence day commemoration on August 17, 2011.
"I will invite the three dancing groups to dance before the palace on the Indonesian independence day commemoration on August 17," Yudhoyono said at the eighth commemoration of the Society Mutual Cooperation month devotion here on Tuesday.
The president expressed his wish to invite the Pontianak dancing groups after looking on the dance motion performed by three dancing groups at the capital city of West Kalimantan province.

Australian master cheese maker visits Jakarta

Australian master cheese maker Neil Willman is visiting Jakarta this week to introduce a variety of fresh Australian-produced cheeses to Indonesian consumers.
Neil`s visit is hosted by Austrade - Australia`s trade and investment development agency - and Dairy Australia, will include seminars, trade sessions and consumer cheese tastings of top-quality cheeses produced by some of Australia`s finest cheese makers, the Australian embassy said in a press statement here Thursday.
Leith Doody, Austrade`s Regional Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner said, "Australia today produces high-quality fresh produce. Consumers in Indonesia are demanding healthy and nutritious food and we are pleased to be able to supply those needs."

Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen dies at 63

British actress Elisabeth Sladen, who starred in the popular "Doctor Who" sci-fi series and the spin-off show "The Sarah Jane Adventures," has died aged 63, the BBC said on Tuesday.
According to the broadcaster, Sladen appeared as Doctor Who assistant Sarah Jane Smith in the BBC television series between 1973 and 1976 opposite Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.
More recently the actress appeared in four series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" on children`s channel CBBC.

Richard Gere to be guarded by 100 police

A total of 100 policemen will be deployed to guard Hollywood actor Richard Gere who will visit the Buddhist Borobudur Temple on Sunday.
Magelang Police Chief Adj. Senr Comm. Edy Murbowo said that the security maintenance during the visit of the Hollywood actor at the temple would be carried out in a normal way, not excessive.
He said that most of the 100 personnel will wear plain clothes so that Gere`s privacy would not be disturbed.
It was reported earlier that the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park (TWCB) management was ready to greet and receive the actor.

Malaysia to take part in cultural parade in Bali

Malaysia will take part in the cultural parade to be held to mark the opening of the 33rd annual month-long Bali Arts Festival (PKB) on June 10.
Malaysia will be the only foreign country to present its art troupe in the cultural parade along with art troupes from eight districts and city in Bali, head of Bali cultural service I Ketut Suastika said here on Thursday.
He said seven art groups from five foreign countries meanwhile would take part in the arts festival.
